  • The Broadway corridor is one of the most well served active transportation corridors in the city

    Meeting Date:

Staff recommendation to Remove Active Transportation Lanes from Broadway Road Design

Full disclosure, every single person in my family, we are avid cyclists. We love to mountain bike ride. We like to road ride.

And we have been traversing this city actually since I was in grade four. I used to ride my BMX, my Mongoose BMX from, you know, the 2800 block of East 54th all the way down to 240 West 62nd in a time you can actually do that. So needless to say, I am very pro-bike infrastructure.

I am pro-multimodal infrastructure. And in a perfect world with unlimited resources, we would literally do everything. Unfortunately, we do not live in la-la land where we have unlimited resources.

And so we do have to prioritize. Like I said, we have limited resources. And we have a greater need for infrastructure in many parts of Vancouver that is underserviced.

The Broadway corridor is one of the most well served corridors in the city. We have a full bike lane on 10th Avenue with additional routes on 7th, 8th, and 14th. And using limited funds in these to build new, you know, not totally necessary lanes on Broadway would impact our ability to improve active transportation corridors, including Portside Greenway, Kent Avenue, Eastside Crosscut, Robson Pedestrian Improvements, and Granville Street.

Now, what we're really talking about here is answering the question of whether it's a good idea to spend $10 to $20 million to build another bike lane when there's already full, excellent infrastructure literally one block away. It's about prioritizing. And so I do agree with Councillor Carr.

We need to address climate change. And I agree with her that safety, if we have infrastructure that people will use, especially with biking, and it's safe, more people will come out. And it will actually change behaviors so we can address climate change even more.

And that's why I support the amendment and option A, because we can take those limited resources, and instead of investing them in an area that already has a lot of infrastructure, we can go to other parts of the city to build this type of infrastructure to get people on their bikes to make it safer and to change behaviors. And so, like I said, I'm going to be voting for the amendment and option A to address those issues, the shared goals that Councillor Carr has just mentioned. Thank you.

  • We're moving Active Transportation funding from Broadway to Kent Avenue

    Meeting Date:

Funding Active Transportation along Kent Avenue

.. as an avid cyclist and haven't been down there and having grown up in the let's call it what it is it's it's actually terrifying try riding your bike down there and so I do think you know when we look at this holistically I think it's great look we we love cyclists I think decisions that we've made in council in the past really help us be able to make investments and have the opportunity to make these decisions with you know when it comes to adding a fifth bike lane within a couple hundred meters of broadway you know I know there's been some you know public you know grief around that but when we make those hard decisions we're able to create opportunities where we can add more bike infrastructure where we are not served at all and so I'm glad we are finally looking at this and I'm highly encouraged I hope we see a day very soon where we can ride the Arbutus Greenway and then connect on additional infrastructure and go right down to the river district and over to Burnaby it's going to be great
